NordicTrack Commercial X22i Review

Last Updated: April 17, 2020

NordicTrack’s series of incline trainers are quite popular worldwide, thanks to their brilliant 40% maximum incline coupled with a number of user-friendly and high-tech features. It’s the latest – and priciest – among their incline trainer models with its large cutting-edge display and some new perks. For those of our readers who are still not sure about the purpose of an incline trainer, however, let’s go through that before getting into the details about the X22i.

Incline Trainers and the Benefits of Using Them

The incline option on treadmills and incline trainers is made to mimic ramps or slopes for a ‘climbing while walking’ experience. It adds more variety and challenge to your workouts and has many benefits.

Where NordicTrack’s regular treadmills offer a maximum incline of 15%, these incline trainers are a whole other story. These can go from -6% (decline) all the way up to a massive 40% (maximum incline). While incline trainers from many other manufacturers only have some pre-set incline levels, they rarely go above 30%.  NordicTrack’s incline trainers have a clear advantage here.

Multiply Your Calorie Burn

According to livestrong.com, there’s up to 5 times more calorie burn while walking on a 40% incline versus walking on a flat treadmill at 2mph. Walking at 2 mph on a 40-degree incline for just 20 minutes will burn about 400 calories for an average 165-pound person. Even a 20-degree incline can give you a 236-calorie burn over 20 minutes, helping you be most productive with your time.

Get Rid of Fat

Experts say that our bodies burn carbohydrates first when walking on flat treadmills. In contrast, high inclines tend to burn fat first. For instance, about  70% more fat is burnt at a 17-degree incline as compared to zero incline.

Build Lean Lower Body Muscle

It has been proven by research that walking with incline activates the muscle groups in your lower body, which can in turn lead you to further build lean muscle. Incline trainers are more geared toward strength training since the anti-gravity climbing creates load on your muscles. A 15% incline or higher is recommended for proper strength training. As you build more muscle, your stamina also increases, helping you work out longer with higher endurance.

Protect Those Knee Joints

A study by Haggerty M et al shows that internal knee-abduction moment decreases with higher incline levels. In simpler words, you’ll be less likely to suffer from painful Runner’s Knee which is a common problem on flat treadmills. However, extreme incline can also cause damage if you’re not used to it, so we recommend you to take it slow!

Heart-Healthy Workout

If you’re not really fond of running but would like to do some cardio, incline training could be just the thing for you. Research has proven incline walking to be good for your heart since it increases heart rate even at speeds as low as 1.5 to 2 mph.

Expert Tip: Certified personal trainer Lora Garrick suggests walking at 1.5 mph on inclines as high as 30%, while trying not to grip the handlebars. This will maintain good posture. Extreme inclines may worry you, but going slower without gripping the bar or console will help you make the most of your machine.

NordicTrack X22i Features

The X22i is overall a sturdy incline treadmill, being chock-full of everything you need for optimal variety and comfort during your workout. Here are some details about its features and design.

  • Big Screen Action

It’s the same kind of web-enabled HD touchscreen like the ones on other NordicTrack treadmills with one big difference – a luxurious 22-inch display. This is basically our favorite feature on the X22i. It has made our internet surfing so much better with great viewing of iFit workout videos and our favorite shows. The best use we’ve made of this larger screen is using the iFit virtual running locations – so realistic!

  • iFit-Compatible with Free Year-Long Trial

We owe so much to this fitness app! It really gets you in the mood to workout. As a big plus, NordicTrack is offering FREE iFit membership for a year with the purchase of some of its treadmills, and guess what? The X22i is on the list!

All of NordicTrack incline trainers are iFit-compatible. Usually, iFit requires a paid monthly subscription, so you’ll be saving quite a few dollars with this free perk.

One thing we really appreciate about iFit is its simplest feature – stat tracking. It tracks your nutrition, activity, and sleep to ensure whole body wellness when you are working out and when you are not. A single membership allows up to four user profiles so you can share with your family and friends.

Another feature we’re addicted to is virtual location running. Especially with the large 22-inch screen, we feel like genuine explorers. It can get you immersed in the beauty of real-life places on the map, from gorgeous island beaches to street views across the globe. It’s a neat feature.

iFit has a library of thousands of workout videos to choose from. It also has a live personal training option where world-class trainers control your machine’s speed and incline in real-time. You can even participate in its challenges and marathons for further motivation.

  • 50 Workout Programs on Board

Just like its siblings, the NordicTrack X22i has plenty of built-in workout programs as alternatives to iFit. These goal-oriented programs can avoid monotony by providing a progressive approach to fitness.

  • Wide Incline and Speed Range

Once again, this feature is not just unique to the X22i, being the same in all other NordicTrack incline trainers. The X22i reaches speeds up to 12 mph and a massive incline range from -6 to 40%. This makes it very customizable and suitable for professional athletes as well.

Using even a 15% incline makes you feel some serious lower-body burn in a matter of minutes, proving the X22i to be a great piece of strength-training equipment as well.

  • 4.0 CHP Powerful Motor

NordicTrack’s quiet motor is back in the X22i in all its powerful glory. The 4.0 CHP motor is supportive of the most intense workouts while minimizing vibrations to provide a smooth running experience.

  • Shock-Absorbing ReFlex™ Cushioning

Consider this feature as a favor to your aching joints, which is quite common among treadmill and incline users. The Reflex™ Cushioning technology is nothing new as far as the NordicTrack models are concerned, offering each of its treadmills and incline trainers an optional padded feel to their running deck.

Once this feature was turned on, we could feel the difference in each stride due to the running deck being gentler on our knees and feet. It’s quite comfortable in comparison to running on most tough-feeling outdoor roads. Overall, this cushioning feature is a great initiative especially for sufferers of Runner’s Knee (Patellofemoral Stress Syndrome), back pain, Achilles tendonitis, and plantar fasciitis.

  • Extra-Wide and Quiet Tread Belt

The 22 x 60 inch tread belt is quite spacious. We’ve also always loved how the NordicTrack running belts are so quiet. Instead of the common whirring sound that can be quite irritating on treadmills, they provide a peaceful workout experience. Of course, the 2.5” smooth-running rollers help in reducing friction and noise too.

  • Dual Workout Fans

There are cooling fans on the console that are made to adjust to the incline trainer settings. These are similar to the ones present on the previous models.

  • Audio Features

The X22i is iPod compatible, along with having two powerful three-inch speakers. The sound system surely didn’t disappoint us!

  • Heart Rate Monitors

The handlebars have pulse sensors that can be gripped to display a reading of your heart rate on-screen. Moreover, the X22i has a wireless iFit Bluetooth chest strap which also serves the same purpose. From our experience, both features are sensitive and provide accurate readings.

  • Easy Assembly and Free Installation

Assembly is not complicated when it comes to the X22i since it’s boxed in a way to make setup easy. Additionally, unlike its previous models, the X22i is the first to offer free professional installation.

Pros

  • Posh 22” web-enabled touchscreen to keep you occupied
  • Powerful 4.0 CHP motor that minimizes vibrations and is conducive to more intense workouts
  • Quiet, noise-reducing tread belt which is spacious enough to accommodate taller users
  • Wide range of speed and incline
  • iFit compatibility with a free year-long membership
  • 50 on-board workouts
  • Reflex™ Cushioning technology in the running deck to protect your knees and back
  • Dual workout fans for comfort
  • Good sound system
  • Heart rate monitors to stay in the right fitness zone
  • Good warranty package
  • Easy assembly and free installation

Cons

  • Cannot accommodate persons heavier than 300 lbs
  • Not a folding incline trainer, so will occupy considerable space all the time

Warranty Summary

The NordicTrack Commercial X22i comes with:

  • 10-Year Frame Warranty
  • 2-Year Parts Warranty
  • 1-Year Labor Warranty

Bottom Line

The X22i is a solid piece of equipment but to be fair, we still don’t find it that much different from its lower trim siblings except for the large 22-inch screen. If you’re a fan of big displays, you should go for the X22i vs. junior models. If not, save a few hundred dollars and buy the X11i instead.
